James Hamilton Academy is a six-year non-denominational, co-educational, comprehensive school. It is located in Sutherland Drive, (New Farm Loch), Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire. The school roll for 2014 has 676 pupils but there is capacity for 1050 pupils. Pupils from New Fram Primary, Silverwood Primary and Onthank Primary would normally transition at the end of primary 7, to become pupils of S1 in James Hamilton Academy. The accommodation is extensive in 4 blocks with adjacent playing fields There is also a Primary School (New Farm Primary School), and a Nursery (New Farm Early Childhood Centre) sharing the same campus. In Block A on the ground floor and four of the rooms on the first floor is the New Farm Primary School, the remainder of the rooms on the first floor contain Modern Languages department (French,Spanish) and Social Subjects Department (History,Modern Studies,Geography) On Block B there is Home Economics on the second floor, a Staff Room and Library on the first floor and Main offices on the ground floor. On Block C on the second floor there is Business Education and IT (Administration, Accounting and Finance) Art and (Digital Media, Art and Design Studies, Photography) On the first floor there is English, Science and Computing. On the ground floor there is Mathematics and Technical Studies. Block D contains the PE and Music provision which are joined to either side of the Dining Hall. The PE department has a large games hall, a smaller gym hall, a fitness suite, a small office and also appropriate changing facilities and storage rooms. In October 2013 plans were approved by East Ayrshire to build a new, age 3 to age 18 campus, including a new build secondary school, which will open with effect from the start of the 2017/18 academic session in August 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter. This new campus will contain a merger of Kilmarnock Academy and James Hamilton Academy, a merger of New Farm Primary and Silverwood Primary, and an Early Childhood Centre, as well as community facilities.
